This installment in the Biography series covers the major events in Bob Fosse's life and takes a clear-eyed look at both his prodigious talent and his self-destructive tendencies. The program focuses more on Fosse as a director and choreographer of musicals (on film, stage, and television) than on his work as a writer and director of drama. While Kiss Me Kate (in which he stole the show as a member of the dance ensemble), Sweet Charity, Cabaret, and All That Jazz are discussed, his movies about comedian Lenny Bruce (the Oscar-nominated Lenny) and Playmate Dorothy Stratten (Star 80) are not. These are odd omissions in what is otherwise a compelling portrait of a unique figure in the world of entertainment--the only person to win an Oscar, a Tony, and an Emmy all in the same year. Those interviewed include Fosse's wife, actress Gwen Verdon (from whom he separated but never divorced), dancer Anne Reinking (with whom he had a very public affair), actor Roy Scheider (who played a thinly veiled Fosse in All That Jazz), and good friend, playwright Neil Simon. --Kathleen C.
